For the Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef or ½ lb ground Italian sausage + ½ lb ground beef
  • Salt to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 15 oz tomato sauce
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Crushed red pepper flakes to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves optional

For Serving

  • Spaghetti noodles

Cooking Instructions

  • In a skillet, cook ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until browned. Drain excess grease.
  • Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, parsley, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar.
  • Add water, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Stir in fresh basil (optional) before serving.
  • Top cooked spaghetti with sauce and enjoy!

Notes

Combining ground beef with Italian sausage gives the sauce a richer flavor. Let the sauce simmer longer for deeper flavor. Adjust spice levels with additional crushed red pepper or chili powder. Draining grease helps keep the sauce from being oily.
